Impressions from the workshop with Bonnitta Roy from APP Associates, Alderlore Insight Center, USA, Ct.; April 1 – 3, 2016

With fantastic people from all over Europe (and some US) we spent 3 fun intensive days looking into a kind of organizational development that deals with self-organization, elegant architectures and those principles that foster emergent behavior, team intelligence, distributive power and decision-making – without rigid new governance models. We explored and examined the key principles, central practices and deep processes of open authentic participation in organizational life.

These were some of  our other topics:

APPWEBLOGO (1)Playing with complex adaptive and complex responsive systems, we gained a new understanding of the nature of emergent processes. We explored new guidance and design principles for organzational life. We looked at how to negotiate organizational and personal intentions, value streams and identities, how to solve the tension between our uniqueness, asymmetrical needs and the distribution of energy, decision and power in a group. We looked at the design of the architecture of the organizational space– one that allows for the release of built up complexity, for emergent behavior and novelty to arise.  We experimented with the four languages of change, that are at the core of Bonnie’s new approach: “I call this new design The Open Participatory Organization, or OPO for short. The OPO is a fully integrated design. It is an open architecture that is supported by a participatory communications platform and is backed-up by a governance that evolves as the organization evolves” from Bonnie’s blog post).

There are four ‘locations’ with distinctly different values sets, objectives, outcomes and strategic conversations to be held around them. Most organizations have one or two of them, but hardly any are engaging in all of the necessary conversations.

At the end, we explored why this really matters: we are working and living in environments where we have to make choices when we cannot predict outcomes.  Knowing how to allow group dynamics to be emergent becomes invaluable.

Bonnitta Roy’s workshop left us totally inspired, and with many many kind of thoughts and processes to unpack, think about and apply. It opened up new, generative, collaborative spaces. Turning howe to our own business, we have started applying the OPO principles, practices and processes – with first insights and their consequences. We know there are many more insights to come. In some instances we are holding new strategic conversations around our trust networks and new alliances, for example www.eclp.eu and with our Swedish friends around the Crisp Network. Watch this space!  Comments welcome.

Think/Feel Tank: In-sighting Emergent Capacities

We are co-creating a collaborative symposion called “In-sighting Emergent Capacities” at Alderlore Insight Center, CT, in November 14 – 17, 2013, under the guidance of Bonnitta Roy.

Alderlore Insight Center invited people from diverse wisdom traditions who are driven by a strong desire to realize the next iterative and alternative steps in common reality going beyond the usual dialectics. The people participating in this symposium have been very careful to delineate specific approaches that steer clear of the conventional traps of collective practice. This symposium brings these traditions together for the first time to engage as peers – all on the same level to practice collective insight. We will be using shared capacities of intuiting and our understanding of systems design and meta-theory in order to identify principles underlying the in-sighting process and in order to liberate truly emergent and elegant solutions for complex adaptive challenges.

The central attractor for such an assemblage is a kind of “collective alignment” that is very similar to the individual experience of insight, with the progressive elimination of limiting structures, habits, pathological patterns, internalized shadow, collective shadow, etc… in order to reach the free and spontaneous energetic inter-being of an intimate collective. The design is such to allow us to see if and when a group can achieve collectively, this state of which is both shared and share-able, where the possibility for insight is heightened, then are we able to function collaboratively in a much a more effective way, analogous to the effects of insight meditation on the individual and the individual’s life-projects.

“To design for such co-creative emergent processes means to discover the minimum elegant structure for insight-generation. Since this can lead to periods of intense chaos, a community of trust must be developed and maintained through a deep and intimate fabric of mutual fellowship, which includes respect and reciprocity. A crucial component of trust is theory-practice consistency; and so it is important to be on the lookout for means-ends conflicts, since they are the way theory-practice inconsistencies show up in community. It is also crucial that we don’t have prior assumptions about what community health or process looks like, or what the “we-space” is supposed to feel like, or how the transpersonal should express itself in a collective endeavor. To design for emergent transformation, requires designing from causal generative states of awareness. This takes the form of “ritualized inquiry” combined with a deep sensitivity to what is latent and wants to emerge – a sensitivity which arises in the core spaces of one-self(s) as universalized creative energy” (Bonnie Roy).

In our exploration we are looking to identify a rigorous set of principles for collective insight that is not values or world-view specific, but is methodological in scope and processural in practice. Then we have the possibility of bringing collective insight-training into a much larger context and have a powerful practice for addressing 21 Century problems.

Taking on the Future: Transformation in a Changing Climate

Workshop on Transformative Leadership in a Changing Climate, Saturday 22 June, 2013, Oslo 

If we see transformative change as a necessary response to global climate change, we have to know its processes intimately. Transformations that respond to adaptive challenges involve fundamental shifts in perspective and meaning. In order to be able to design, catalyze, foster or lead such shifts, leaders need to recognize stages, depth and width of the process, identify patterns of systemic pushback, and know what to do with immunities to change, as well as how to handle the usual resistances and escape mechanisms.

For those who are interested in learning more about leadership for change, we offer a one-day intensive workshop directly following the international conference on  “Transformation in a Changing Climate” at the University of Oslo .

The workshop will lead participants into experiencing transformative processes first hand and head-on. We will look at how our evolving worldviews frame the problem in need of transformation, how to shift polarized perspectives, and unlock movement towards solutions.

The work offers insights into the more concealed mechanisms and stages of transformation and on how to detect and overcome hidden immunities to change and adaptive pushback in yourself and others. Other expected results include insights into personal recurring patterns and on how to restructure seemingly fixed conditions. The links between personal and global trans-formation, and leadership, will become clear.

The workshop is delivered by a team of international professionals in the field of transformation and leadership development: Abigail Lynam, Geoff Fitch and Anne Caspari.

Transformative Workshop January 12/13 2013 in Oslo

Transformative Leadership Workshop –  Taking on the Future: Global Transformation, up-close and personal 
“Where the rubber hits the road”
January 11, 2013, 13.00-16.00, Georg Sverdups Hus, Auditorium 2, University of Oslo Followed by a two-day workshop on personal transformation, January 12-13

Over the next years we are likely to experience global changes at a rate and scale that is unprecedented in human history. Many people are concerned about the future – and frustrated because there is currently so little evidence of actions at the scale and magnitude considered to be necessary to meet complex challenges like climate change. We often hear talk about leverage points for large-scale systems changes, or about the role of “trim tabs,” whose small moves can make a powerful difference. But how do we actually make change happen? Do we ourselves need to change? To more effectively contribute to collective change, we need to have more hands on knowledge about change mechanisms and how to get around the blind spots–and experience it first-hand so that we can work better with others.

In January 2013, we, Anne Caspari and Karen O’Brien, will address these issues head-on by offering a 3-hour experiential intro workshop that focuses on the mechanisms of change, including how our individual and collective beliefs can create immunities to change that can sabotage well-intentioned efforts to make a difference. This is about personal change, collective change, and global change. Participants will gain personal insights on their own beliefs and how they influence their actions in the world around them. For those who are willing to go deeper and want to lead change, the 3-hour workshop will be followed by a 2-day “Resurfacing” course that will work directly with personal beliefs and attitudes towards change. The Resurfacing Course requires a commitment of two full days, and for this part there is a participation fee of 2600 NOK/350 EUR. More information about this course will be sent to those who are interested.

The workshop addresses individuals who:

  • feel they are running against the same walls and have tried different methods that showed limited success ;
  • experience recurrent life situations that they are ready to change;
  • are interested in the mechanisms of change, transformation and obstacles to it, in self and in others;
  • feel they are ready to play a bigger game and make a difference in the world;
  • are personal coaches, change agents, or trim tabs (complementary with coaching work, shadow work, integral theory, immunity to change work).

The 2-day workshop will be thoroughly experiental and intensive. The exercises in Resurfacing take you behind the scenes of consciousness for a look at the blueprints by which you build your life experiences. The rewards are new perspectives and realizations about how personal reality works – or why it doesn’t. You get special insights into hidden assumptions and connections that you had no idea that they were stored and well -hidden on your “hard disk” – yet were creating some recurring themes in your life and were protected from introspection and from changing them. ReSurfacing is an expedition into consciousness that you personalize according to your own needs. The insights you gain can be directly applied to professional and collective topics.
